We were and are America more than you.

We’ve all been down this road before.  Maybe.  We have.  What matters is that others should too.  This image of the freefall in to the lustrious valley is an open invitation to what discoveries are available.  What options are presented are those that parallel this image.  The image means openness to nature, excitement and a thorough flex of the adrenaline muscle.  Reality can be so exciting, especially if Mother Nature distorts our level of entertaiment. When it comes to this level of excitment in its most timeless form, as nature intended, Yosemite National Park is second to none. More specifically even, Yosemite’s most iconic form, Half Dome. As the name implies Half Dome is a gargantuan solid granite dome split nearly perfectly in two by Mother nature herself. This glacial phenomenon has produced a one of a kind geological anomoly not matched anywhere else on earth.

For the thrill seeker Half Dome is not simlpy a wonder to be gawked at, it is to be conquered. Through the months of April to September, massive cables are attached to the rear of the dome which allow access to the top of the 2,300ft hunk of rock. Said cables do require a 7 mile hike to reach however, greatness is not granted, it is earned.  The hike begins in the valley floor and leads you meandering up a heavily trodden trail passed not one but two breathtaking falls. Vernal and Nevada respectively. The falls themselves are reason enough to traverse the trail for many, but for you, the adventurer, a greater treasure awaits your perserverance. Upon arrival of the base of the dome the cables are not viewable, a short sub-dome ascent must be completed (picture a stair stepper au-naturale with an amazing view). Reaching the cables finally, a rather daunting view awaits. A 700 foot, seemingly vertical upon first glance staircase of cable and wooden planks awaits, a looming sentinal which will stir feelings of angst in even seasoned outdoorsmen and women alike. Do not be dismayed as taking the cables slow and diligently will not prove as difficult as perceived. Looking down is encouraged as you will be going back down the same staircase and may as well get the mental block out of the way.

Reaching the top is the most rewarding destination for a hike I have ever encountered in all my years. The apex of the dome is quite acommidating, a platform which is equal to 3-4 football fields is a great location for a much needed lunch break or a little R&R. Views can only be described as unparalleled. 2,300 feet above the Valley floor might as well be the top of the world. If you happen to bring a date and hold eachother tight near the edge when a strong breeze flutters her locks you may or may not hear the theme from Titanic subliminally, quite magical. For the uber adrenaline junkies, a small six foot “diving board” protrudes from the face which is the ultimate perch for your FB profile pic, sure to fetch tens of likes. Conquering this gargantuan of nature comes with a moderate amount of effort and mental fortitude, however your perserverance along with the grandiosity of the destination will leave you with a sense of acomplishment that will remain with you for a lifetime. Push yourself, find that drive and treat yourself to an experience like no other. Dare to be great, dare to live, dare to Half Dome.
