Castle Living: Embracing Luxury, Adventure, and a Touch of Whimsy in Ireland’s Historic Estates

Imagine waking up in a lavish Irish castle, where every corner tells a story of history and opulence. Surrounded by meticulously manicured gardens that evoke timeless charm, guests are transported to a world of enchantment. The grounds exude a sense of serenity, providing a perfect backdrop for both leisurely strolls and spontaneous moments of whimsy.

As a travel journalist, I’ve had the privilege of exploring some of the world’s most remarkable destinations, but few experiences rival the enchantment of staying in an Irish castle. These historic estates offer more than accommodations—they transport you to extraordinary settings filled with unique adventures. Whether witnessing the graceful flight of soaring hawks during a falconry lesson, cruising serene lakes with nothing but the sound of water lapping against the boat, or simply enjoying the tranquility of expansive gardens, each visit feels like stepping into a dream.

At Dromoland Castle, I felt like royalty from the moment I arrived. The highlight of my stay was a hawk walk, where a majestic falcon gracefully glided to my gloved hand amidst the castle’s lush surroundings. The quiet stillness of the gardens, broken only by the soft sounds of nature, created a magical atmosphere. After a day of exploration, I relaxed in my luxurious Queen Anne suite, complete with a giant tub, savoring the peace and beauty of the estate while the fading light created a soft glow in the room.

Ashford Castle offered an experience steeped in a rich, 800-year-old legacy. A hawk walk captivated me with the intelligence and grace of these magnificent birds, their sharp eyes surveying the land below. A peaceful boat ride around the shimmering Lough Corrib transported me to a world of natural beauty. Activities like clay pigeon shooting with an Olympian added thrilling excitement, while the castle’s spa and pool provided moments of pure relaxation.

Ballyfin feels like a page from a storybook, with its Regency-era grandeur and 614 acres of pristine countryside. Every detail, from the elegant interiors to the tranquil gardens and whimsical follies, exudes refinement and charm. It’s a place where guests can indulge in quintessential country pursuits—horseback riding, falconry, or quiet moments by a crackling fire. Ballyfin offers the kind of experience that lingers in your imagination long after your visit.

In the heart of Dublin, The Shelbourne, Autograph Collection, blended timeless elegance with urban sophistication. Celebrating its 200th anniversary, this historic hotel offered a perfect fusion of history and modern comforts. Staying in the Michael Collins Suite, I marveled at the rich history embedded in the Constitution Room, where Ireland’s Constitution was drafted. St. Stephen’s Green provided a stunning backdrop for a joyful hula hooping moment, blending the vibrancy of Dublin’s city life with the Shelbourne’s timeless charm.

The hotel’s luxurious pool was a serene oasis where I could unwind after a day of exploring the city. But what truly stood out was the spa experience—without a doubt, it offered the best hair blowout of my life. Erin, the talented stylist at the Shelbourne’s spa, transformed my hair into perfect beach waves, ideal for filming my Celtic Charm segment for The Jet Set TV.

Abbeyglen Castle Hotel felt like a welcoming home away from home with its intimate atmosphere and nightly singing sessions at dinner. Tales of the region’s history were shared over a glass of smooth Irish whiskey. This time, I hula hooped on the turret that was part of my suite at the top of the hotel, enjoying panoramic views of the picturesque grounds below, embracing the joyful spirit of this enchanting place.

At Lough Erne Resort, I discovered a perfect blend of tranquility and indulgence. A scenic boat ride revealed breathtaking views of the lake, swans and surrounding countryside. The resort’s rolling green spaces provided the ideal setting for yet another hula hoop session, embracing the beauty of nature at its finest.

Traveling on Aer Lingus from Los Angeles to Dublin has never been more seamless. With a direct flight and preclearance in Dublin, returning to the USA feels effortless and enjoyable. This smooth experience sets the stage for a memorable journey to immerse myself in the magic of the Irish countryside.

Each of these castles and estates provided a unique perspective on Irish history and hospitality—from ancient traditions to modern luxuries like world-class dining and seaweed spa treatments. What truly stood out, however, was how they invited me to fully embrace the moment.

If you’re dreaming of stepping into a fairytale, there’s no better place than Ireland’s incredible castles and estates. These experiences offer the perfect blend of opulence and adventure.
