EPCOT isn’t where most people expect to pull on a wetsuit.
While in Orlando attending DEMA, the world’s largest dive industry event, I had the opportunity to pair the conference with one of the most magical dives of my life: DiveQuest at EPCOT.
Yet beneath the park’s familiar pathways and iconic attractions lies one of Walt Disney World’s best-kept secrets: a nearly six‑million‑gallon aquarium where certified divers can slip underwater and experience Disney magic from an entirely different perspective.
Before gearing up to dive, I spoke with Kenny Dyal aka @sweetwater_scuba, a Disney Divemaster for the last twenty years and one of the experts behind EPCOT’s scuba program, about what makes this experience so singular — and why it continues to surprise even the most seasoned divers.
A Dive Unlike Anywhere Else
Currently offered five days a week with two evening dive groups, EPCOT’s scuba experience is open to anyone with an open water certification. Everything is handled on-site, from equipment to lockers and showers, removing many of the logistical hurdles that can come with ocean diving.
But convenience is only part of the appeal.
“You get to scuba dive inside Disney World and interact with guests through the glass,” Kenny explains. “That doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world.”
As divers move through the Living Seas exhibit, park guests watch from the other side — waving, snapping photos, and occasionally pressing close to the glass. When a child in a princess costume lights up at the sight of a diver offering a high‑five, the boundary between attraction and audience disappears.
“The real Disney magic is the connection,” Kenny says. “As a guest, you actually get to help create it.”

Inside the Living Seas
The scale of the experience often catches first‑time divers off guard. The Living Seas tank holds 5.7 million gallons of saltwater, making it one of the largest aquariums in the world and home to more than 2,000 aquatic animals.
“People don’t realize how big it is until they dive,” Kenny says. “That’s what they talk about afterward.”
The environment is intentionally stress‑free. With no waves, no weather concerns, and virtually no current, the focus stays on observation rather than conditions. Water temperatures hover around 77 degrees Fahrenheit, creating a comfortable setting that mirrors tropical seas.
The marine life reflects that balance as well. Divers encounter sea turtles, stingrays, reef fish, and sharks in clear water designed for close observation rather than spectacle. While the tank includes sharks, rays, sea turtles, and large predatory fish, it’s a carefully curated ecosystem designed for compatibility rather than spectacle.
An Experience Families Can Share
One of the most powerful parts of diving at EPCOT isn’t just what’s in the water — it’s who’s watching from the other side of the glass.
Watching kids and families wave, laugh, and press their hands against the aquarium windows brought me right back to my days volunteering at the Long Beach Aquarium. That spark of wonder, that instant connection, never gets old.
If you scuba dive and your kids don’t, this is the ultimate family win: adventure for you, awe for them, and shared memories you’ll talk about long after the tanks are dry. That’s Disney magic, underwater.
With viewing windows throughout the pavilion — including inside the Coral Reef Restaurant — divers and non-divers can experience the same moment from two different worlds, connected by glass and joy. It’s a rare opportunity to experience the same attraction from two entirely different worlds.
Where Learning Meets Magic
The experience feels particularly at home at EPCOT, a park built around curiosity, education, and global exploration. Diving here isn’t just about thrill; it’s about understanding marine ecosystems, conservation, and how storytelling can bring science to life.
As I hovered underwater, watching guests press their hands to the glass, it was impossible not to feel the emotional pull of the moment. This wasn’t just scuba diving — it was participation.
“My bucket list is coming true,” I said as we prepared to enter the water.
Moments later, I slipped beneath the surface, joining sea turtles, sharks, and fulfilling a true bucket-list dream: swimming alongside a hammerhead shark. I’m deeply grateful to the DiveQuest team for making this experience possible — and especially to Kenny for sharing his passion and insight.
