Why does Anna Karsten go everywhere?

Anna Karsten doesn’t let anything stop her from living an adventurous lifestyle and traveling the world.  She has a chronic disease and wants others to get inspiration from her motto of “dream big, and travel with purpose and learn from it.” With more than 78 countries under her belt, she also believes that you can have combine your career and travels.  She published a book while traveling solo throughout Africa.

1.)Where was the first place that you traveled that made you think WOW—travel is amazing (think history book come to life or …..)

Probably Paris and London, but not because of the city itself but their castles. I’m a history buff, so I really enjoyed walking around past residences of royals and see where all these things I read about in history books took place

2.)If you had unlimited resources, where would you go and what would you do?

Probably space. I’d love to see the earth from above and experience zero gravity.

3.)What were you afraid to do and how did you find the courage to overcome it?

Heights. After I did a bungee jump from Bloukrans Bridge in South Africa, I’m less afraid.

4.)What apps do you use regularly that make your life easier?

I must say I’m not really an app person. The only apps I use are photo editing apps.

5.)What place do you wish more people have seen?

Iran. I think a lot of people are afraid of traveling there, but it’s a country full of incredibly friendly people and gorgeous places

6.)Best advice you have been given and by whom?

Someone in Thailand once told me to get lost on purpose. It really worked.

7.)When were you surprised by the kindness of strangers on a trip?

Last year when I traveled to Iran I experienced locals giving me food, inviting me to stay with them and giving me gifts, saying it’s just because they enjoy foreigners in their country. I mentioned once that I couldn’t put credit on my phone and before I turned they did it for me and refused to take my money.

8.)What inspired you to travel for extended periods of time or live in a new country?

I had to leave my country to get more experience and opportunities that weren’t available in my home country.

9.)I travel because…. I can and I enjoy learning about new places and their cultures. And discover off-the-path destinations.

10.) My favorite travel or business book is… The Taliban Shuttle by Kim Barker

11.)  How about hotels? What’s your favorite or one you’d recommend?

Azulik in Tulum
