There have been some pretty hilarious (and humiliating) moments peppered throughout my career in business development—too many to include in a single volume of stories and advice—but this is one of my favorites.

I was getting ready to pitch a TV show to the president of ABC. He’s a real hotshot, but I knew him from way back, when we were pups. We grew up in the industry together, and a group of us used to meet for a regular happy hour.

Getting the meeting was a piece of cake; I just asked. I was with my two studly business partners, which made it three men and me. It’s not unusual, unfortunately, to be the only girl in the room.

We were led into a massive office and sat down in a circle on unusually low couches. These couches were so low and so comfortable, that getting myself into a power position was a little awkward. I leaned forward and teed off the pitch. Just then, I glanced down and noticed my fly was completely down, exposing my bright electric blue panties. I was frozen and mortified. I could not believe I had forgotten to zip up my pants after going to the bathroom in the lobby. To make matters worse, it was laundry day and I was wearing my comfy cotton GAP daily affirmation “Inspirational Underwear.” What was today’s message? “YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL.” Are you kidding me? You are beautiful?!?! What was I going to do? They could clearly read my underwear.

I couldn’t even start the pitch because all I was thinking about was my “beautiful” crotch right out there for the room to see. Well, I thought, screw it. I stood up, my crotch now at eye level, and said, “I guess this might be the most original icebreaker you’ve ever seen,” zipped up my pants and sat back down. Everyone looked at me like I was nuts (which I am) and had a good laugh. With that, the energy was great and the pitch went better than we had hoped. Although we sold the show to another network, that went down as one of the most memorable pitches in history.
